Our First Project: The First 1000 Days – An opportunity from the very beginning
Our first project is located in São Paulo, Brazil, a city where enormous opportunities and deep poverty coexist. Here, we support a unique initiative that focuses on the first 1,000 days of a child's life. This period, from pregnancy to around the age of three, is crucial for brain development, physical health, emotional stability, and learning ability , and lays the foundation for opportunities for success later in life. By investing in this phase, we prevent disadvantages before they arise. Together with local professionals, we work on awareness, education, and preventive care in the favelas. The goal: to give every child the opportunity to reach their full potential.
The Story Behind Our Choice: Why this project touched us!
In 2024, Niek Besuijen met Fagner during a work visit to São Paulo. He served as an interpreter for four days during meetings with cleaning companies. What began as a practical collaboration grew into an inspiring story.
Fagner began his career as an IT specialist. His partner Regiane is an occupational therapist specializing in child development. They met while volunteering with homeless people. What connected them was their shared belief that real change starts with children.
Meanwhile, they work together every day in the most vulnerable neighborhoods, where children grow up with structural disadvantages.
Not due to a lack of talent, but due to a lack of opportunities.
Based on scientific research, they developed an approach that focuses entirely on the first phase of life.
Their mission: to break the cycle of poverty and disadvantage before it becomes entrenched.
Their Approach: Three Pillars for Sustainable Impact
The program rests on three strong foundations:
1. Specialist care for families
Accessible, high-quality support for families who can invest in it. Parents are actively involved in their child's development.
2. Training for educational institutions
Schools and teachers are trained to better recognize and support children with developmental needs.
3. The core social program: Thousand Days.
Aimed at pregnant women and young children in vulnerable neighborhoods, with:

This approach is playful, scientifically based, and proven effective. With a small team, they have already achieved great results:
